The Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has appealed to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to refrain from contesting any future by-election in the Ayawaso East Constituency.
His appeal comes in the wake of the death of the Member of Parliament for the constituency, Naser Toure Mahama, who passed away on Sunday, January 4, 2026, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital after a short illness.
Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM, the Accra Mayor said allowing a non-competitive by-election would serve as a mark of respect to the late legislator.
“The National Democratic Congress will sit down and make a decision that will help the electorate.
“We are not going to struggle over this, and I think and hope that our opponents will not come to contest this election so that we will just do it peacefully as a sign of respect for him,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the late MP for Ayawaso East, Mahama Naser Toure, has been buried at the Madina Muslim Cemetery.
The burial took place on January 5 after Janazah prayers at the National Mosque in Kanda.
The event was attended by members of Parliament, constituents and high-ranking members of the Muslim fraternity.
The prayers were led by the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Nuhu Sharabutu.
