The Minority Leader in Parliament, Osahen Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has lauded the newly elected flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, for what he described as a sincere effort to promote unity within the party following its presidential primary.
Dr Bawumia’s posture after the fiercely contested primary, the Minority Leader noted, has been “commendable”.
“Let’s be honest, the posture of Dr Bawumia, in my view, has been commendable; all of us must understand that we’re one party.
“In all sincerity, I have seen a certain posture in Bawumia expressing his desire to work with all in the party,” he reiterated.
The Minority Leader who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu Constituency, commended the former Vice President on Channel 1 TV programme, ‘The Point Of View’ on February 16, 2026.
He urged all party faithful to move beyond the just ended internal contest and refocus on a shared future.
“All of us must understand that we’re one party. In all sincerity, I have seen a certain posture in Bawumia expressing his desire to work with all in the party,” he said.
Osahen Afenyo-Markin acknowledged that party supporters may still be battling with the emotional trauma of the presidential primary and called for patience and understanding.
“We need to give ourselves time to heal and align psychologically. It’s for the winner to look at the numbers,” he stated, emphasising that reconciliation requires deliberate effort from leadership.
The Minority Leader added that supporters need time to recover and align psychologically after the primaries.
“We need to give ourselves time to heal and align psychologically. It’s for the winner to look at the numbers,” he stated.
Also speaking at the Thanksgiving Service, the Minority Leader urged, “let’s stand together behind our flagbearer, Dr Bawumia, and win power in 2028”.
He encouraged party members to stay disciplined and resolute, insisting that unity and determination would be key to the NPP’s electoral prospects.
Effutu accord
At a stakeholder engagement in Effutu Constituency to forge unity immediately after the presidential primary, Osahen Afenyo-Markin entreated all party faithful to start early campaign to support the NPP’s elected presidential candidate.
Addressing a large crowd, the Minority Leader reiterated that, “If Dr Bawumia fails it is we who have failed him. Let us not fail him, let’s work for him, work for the party and work for our country.”
He emphasised that a collective decision of all party members to forgive one another, especially now that a flagbearer has been elected and engage in vigorous campaign with a united front, would be one of the surest means of securing electoral victory at the next general election.
“It is time to remember who we all are as members of one big political family, the New Patriotic Party. Our flagbearer himself was unequivocal, telling us the need to let go of the past and forge ahead in unity.
“We have to learn from our history when we talk about unity; perhaps that will be a great reminder. As I have said repeatedly over the last two weeks, history has taught us clear but harsh lessons about disunity,” he emphasised.
According to Osahen Afenyo-Markin, history has it that disunity once caused the NPP tradition a great misfortune during an election in the 3rd republic.
Bawumia’s unity efforts
Former Vice President Dr. Bawumia has consistently called on party members to forgive one another and unite ahead of the 2028 general election, following his decisive victory in the NPP presidential primary.
At the National Thanksgiving Service held at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) on February 15, 2026, the NPP flagbearer called on party faithful to set aside grievances arising from the campaign period and work together to reposition the NPP for victory in the 2028 general election.
“The New Patriotic Party (NPP: Development in Freedom) fraternity came together in Accra yesterday to offer to the Almighty God our sacrifice of thanksgiving. We also renewed our commitment to strengthening unity and working together to achieve our common goal.
“May God grant us the wisdom and strength to serve our party and country with integrity, courage, and love,” Dr Bawumia stated a day after the Thanksgiving service.
