The Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari II has presented food items to families affected in the spillage of the Akosombo dam in the Volta region few months ago. The items included 300 bags of maize and 100 bags of rice.
Additionally, the Dagbon King has also donated 100 bags of maize to affected flood victims at Buipe in the Central Gonja district of the Savannah Region.
The Chief of Zangbalun, Naa Dr Jacob Mahama II who did the presentation on behalf of the Yaa Naa stated the gesture is the widows’ mite of the Dagbon Overlord and announced further support if the situation doesn’t improve in the coming period.
“On behalf of the Dagbon traditional council, the chiefs and people of the Dagbon kingdom, I extend our sympathy to the people of Volta region and Buipe in the Savannah region for the colossal loss of properties and livelihoods due to the spillage of the Akosombo dam. You couldn’t have had a more difficult time than now and we stand by you in your moment of difficulty and helplessness.”
The Yaa Naa has also made a clarion call on the government and other benevolent organizations for more relief support to quicken the recovery process, stating the solution of the problems caused by the spillage is beyond the capabilities of the affected people.
“We also call on the relevant ministries to tackle this situation holistically as this extends along the Volta river up to the north especially the Savannah region” he stressed.
Naa Abukari II observed the flooding of Buipe in the Savannah region seems to be an almost perennial event that needs to be solved once and for all, adding the continued yearly loss of properties by the residents is unacceptable and the government should act now and avert it from reoccurring next year.
“I know the government is doing its best and so are several organizations and individuals to contain the situation. I pray that we don’t get tired of helping until everyone is out of danger and life returns back to normal or near normal” he appealed.
Meanwhile, the Yaa Naa has also commended the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Sameul Okudjeto Ablakwa for his untiring efforts to get support for the affected communities, saying, “Your reward is with the good Lord”.
He also acknowledged the support of some Members of Parliament in the northern region especially Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, MP for Karaga, Hon Alhassan Tampuli, MP for Gushegu, former Minority Leader, Hon Haruna Iddrisu and Chief Executive Office for the National Petroleum Authority, Dr Mustapha Abdul Hamid.
