The Asante Kingdom is in mourning following the death of Asantehemaa Nana Konadu Yiadom III, the revered queen mother of the Ashanti people. She passed away peacefully at the age of 91.
The announcement was made through official palace channels, with the Manhyia Palace describing her as a mother figure not only to the royal household but to the entire Ashanti nation. Her passing marks the end of an era in the kingdom’s modern history.
Born in 1927, Nana Konadu Yiadom III ascended to the role of Asantehemaa, succeeding her late mother, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II. Known for her wisdom, grace, and unwavering dedication to Ashanti traditions, she worked closely with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, in preserving the customs and values of the kingdom.
Throughout her tenure, she played a pivotal role in cultural preservation, dispute resolution, and the promotion of women’s leadership within traditional governance structures.
Her counsel was often sought by chiefs, elders, and community leaders across the Ashanti Region and beyond.
Tributes have begun pouring in from traditional leaders, political figures, and ordinary citizens, who remember her as a compassionate leader, a unifying force, and a steadfast guardian of Ashanti heritage.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be officially announced, but the Manhyia Palace is expected to hold elaborate rites in line with Ashanti royal customs. The period of mourning will see black-and-red mourning cloths worn by subjects, as tradition dictates.
Nana Konadu Yiadom III’s passing leaves a significant void in the Ashanti Kingdom, but her legacy of dignity, cultural pride, and motherly leadership will continue to inspire generations to come.
