A “thank-you tour” by National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman, Asiedu Nketia has triggered controversy within the party, with critics describing it as a subtle launch of his 2028 presidential bid.
The tour, slated for September 17–19, 2025, in the Eastern Region, is officially presented as a gesture of gratitude on behalf of the NDC. However, many remain unconvinced, noting that both the party and President John Dramani Mahama had already wrapped up a nationwide “thank-you tour” in July 2025.
Insiders say growing consensus within the party is that the Chairman’s initiative is a strategic move to secure an early edge over other potential flagbearer hopefuls. By branding the trip as a party-sanctioned activity, they argue, Asiedu Nketia gains visibility and momentum ahead of schedule.
This perception has deepened friction within the NDC hierarchy and sparked unease at the Presidency. Officials in government believe the tour undermines their focus. “Whatever the fortunes of the NDC will be in the 2028 general elections will depend on how the government performs,” a source close to the Presidency stated. “Therefore, it is important that, for at least the next two years, all efforts should be geared towards achieving the promises that were made to Ghanaians.”
The Eastern Region leg of the tour will span 16 constituencies in three days:
-
Wednesday, Sept 17: Asuogyamang, Lower Manya, Upper Manya, Yilo, Okere.
-
Thursday, Sept 18: Akuapem North, Akuapem South, Nsawam, Upper West Akim, Asamankese.
-
Friday, Sept 19: Akroso, Achiase, Swedru, Akim Oda, Kade, Akwatia.
Participants are expected to include constituency and branch executives, coordinators, cadres, former executives, traditional leaders, assembly members, and representatives of the Drivers’ Union.
Analysts say the unfolding reactions to this tour will be crucial in shaping internal dynamics within the NDC, as speculation continues to swirl around Asiedu Nketia’s long-term political ambitions.
