Mass dismissal of public sector workers by the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has heightened, with the highly inhumane firings now getting to the Bank of Ghana (BoG) as the Central Bank sacks over 100 workers who were employed under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government in 2024.
The affected staff received official letters of dismissal on June 19, 2025.
The letters signed by Mrs Thelma E. Randolph-Akushie, Head of the Human Resource and Capacity Development Department, cited the bank’s employment terms regarding probation as the basis for the action.
“In accordance with the terms of your contract of employment, a satisfactory six (6)-month probationary period was to be completed.
“Management regrets to inform you that your appointment cannot be confirmed. Consequently, your employment with the Bank will be terminated effective Monday, June 23, 2025.
“In accordance with the terms of your appointment and the Bank’s policies, you will be paid one month’s salary in lieu of notice,” the termination letters stated.
Consequently, the affected staff were instructed to return all bank property to the Human Resource Department by Monday, June 23, 2025.
The move, according to political watchers, appears to be part broader wave of dismissals within state institutions since the change in government on January 7, 2025.
Vincent Ekow Assafuah, Member of Parliament (MP) for Tafo, highlighted the situation on social media
“The termination of appointments continues unabated, with some BOG workers receiving dismissal letters today,” the MP stated.
No official statement
There has been no official statement from the central bank’s leadership beyond the contents of the individual dismissal letters.
It remains unclear whether additional rounds of terminations are planned.
The affected employees, many of whom were brought on board last year, now face uncertainty amid a challenging economic climate.
Chief of Staff’s directive
The Chief of Staff at the Office of the President, Julius Debrah, on 11 February 2025, a little over a month after the John Mahama administration took office, directed the annulment of all public sector appointments and recruitment made after December 7, 2024, citing non-compliance with good governance practices and principles.
In a letter addressed to all heads of government institutions, the Chief of Staff noted that such last-minute appointments were inconsistent with the government’s stated position on end-of-tenure recruitment.
“Consistent with government pronouncements in relation to near-end-of-tenure appointments and recruitment, I wish to bring to your attention that all appointments and recruitment made in the Public Services of Ghana after 7 December 2024 are not in compliance with established good governance practices and principles,” portions of the letter stated.
However, some of the dismissed workers were employed more than a year before the 2024 general election.
