The Government has endorsed the Bawku Conflict Mediation Report presented by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on Tuesday, December 16, 2025.
The report provides a roadmap for achieving lasting peace, reconciliation, and stability in Bawku and surrounding areas.
Key aspects of the government’s position include:
- Endorsement of the report’s findings and recommendations
- Affirmation of Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II as the lawful Bawku Naba
- Recall of Alhaji Seidu Abagre to Nalerigu for an alternative traditional role
- Facilitation of Abagre’s safe movement to Nalerigu
- Request for Otumfuo’s continued leadership in reconciliation efforts
To support socio-economic recovery, President John Dramani Mahama has directed the establishment of a 1 billion Ghana Cedi Bawku Revitalisation Fund.
The fund will be disbursed over three years (2026-2028) for priority infrastructure development, including roads, healthcare, education, and economic facilities.
A high-level committee chaired by Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, will manage the fund. Other members include the Upper East Regional Minister, Donaltus Akamuguri and Majority Leader and leader of Government Business who doubles as the MP for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga.
The Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, in a statement dated Wednesday, December 17, said the Government acknowledges that the protracted conflict has resulted in grave human, social, and economic losses, significantly undermining livelihoods, social cohesion, and development prospects in Bawku and its environs.
Pursuant to the recommendation by the Otumfuo, the Minister disclosed that the Government will immediately facilitate the safe movement of Alhaji Seidu Abagre to Nalerigu, where he shall remain available to receive the directives of the Nayiri.
”In particular, the Government affirms the unequivocal position of the law, as consistently upheld by the Supreme Court of Ghana, that Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II is the lawful Bawku Naba, and that no individual or group is permitted, under any circumstances, to contest his authority or legitimacy” he emphasized.
Meanwhile, the Government has called on all traditional authorities, political leaders, youth groups, civil society organisations, religious bodies, development partners, and the broader citizenry to support the peace-building and reconciliation process in the spirit of unity, restraint, and patriotism.
