Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is facing serious opposition from four members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the NPP’s presidential primary on 31st January, 2026, according to credible information gathered.
Dr Bawumia who was the NPP presidential candidate for the 2024 general election, is seeking re-election to lead the party into the 2028 polls.
He is in the race against Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr Bryan Acheampong, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum and Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
However, THE CUSTODIAN has gleaned that the former vice president is also facing an external challenge as the governing NDC is secretly campaigning for some of his opponents in the NPP’s forthcoming flagbearer race.
The paper further learnt that apart from a whispering campaign against Dr Bawumia, NDC business moguls and some security agencies are backing some of his main challengers with obscene cash.
Even more troubling development, the paper was told, was the government’s refusal to make obligatory payments to some contractors and former government appointees, who are believed to be sympathisers of Dr Bawumia so as to prevent them from supporting the former Vice President financially.
Such payments, THE CUSTODIAN gathered, will only be made after the NPP presidential primary.
Sources within NDC, according to more information received, indicated that Dr Bawumia is feared as a formidable, credible and winnable candidate in the 2028 presidential election as he has been well-marketed across the country since 2008.
Accordingly, the insider sources pointed out that the NDC will not want the former vice president to face a fresh candidate from the governing party as President John Dramani Mahama, who has been on the presidential ballot since 2012 will not be there again for the next general elections.
Bawumia’s belief
It appears Dr Bawumia himself is very much aware of the strong against coming from the governing NDC.
Speaking to party delegates in the Oti Region as part of his campaign tour, the former Vice President indicated the NDC was doing everything to ensure he does not become the NPP’s flagbearer because the governing party is scared.
“The NDC doesn’t want me to win the NPP flagbearership; that’s why they’re campaigning for some of my opponents. They know that if I win the flagbearership race, I will win the 2028 elections,” Dr. Bawumia told party delegates.
