The latest polling data in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries has placed former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia firmly in the lead with 52% support, widening the gap between himself and his closest contender, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, who polled 17%.

The results reflect growing momentum within the ruling party as it prepares to elect a flagbearer ahead of the crucial 2028 general elections.

According to a poll by Global Info Analytics, the popularity of Dr. Bawumia is being driven by his image as a technocrat and economic manager, with significant support from delegates in both the Northern and Ashanti regions, thus making him beat Kennedy Agyapong ahead of the NPP race.

Kennedy Agyapong, the outspoken former Assin Central MP, secured second place with 17%, riding on his strong grassroots appeal and reputation as a straight-talker.

However, the wide margin suggests he faces an uphill battle if he hopes to close the gap before the party’s final decision.

Other aspirants, including former ministers and long-serving party members, polled in the single digits, signalling that the race is shaping into a two-horse contest dominated by Bawumia and Agyapong.

Dr. Bryan Acheampong polled 3%, former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum 1%, and former General Secretary Kwabena Agyapong, Boakye Agyarko, and Addai Nimo each recorded less than 1%.

Bawumia’s early lead underscores his strong positioning within the party machinery, though he cautions that internal contests can shift rapidly as campaigns intensify.

Delegates are expected to weigh loyalty, regional considerations, and electability when casting their votes.

If the numbers hold, Dr. Bawumia could make history as the first Muslim and Northerner to lead the NPP into a general election.

Global Info Analytics surveyed 2,656 NPP delegates, with 2,560 completing all responses, across 263 constituencies between August 12 and 20, using computer-assisted telephone interviews.

The poll carries a confidence level of 99% and a margin of error of ±2.44%.
