A delegation of lawyers affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former Members of Parliament (MPs) of the party have paid a courtesy call on the party’s 2028 flagbearer, former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia,, to congratulate him.
The group, made up of senior legal practitioners who led the party’s 2012 presidential election petition at the Supreme Court and the former lawmakers, met Dr Bawumia at his residence following his decisive win in the party’s presidential primary held on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
The gesture is seen as part of efforts to promote unity within the party after a keenly contested internal election.
Nimako speaks on party unity
Director of Legal Affairs, Gary Nimako Marfo, who spoke on behalf of the legal team, expressed confidence in Dr Bawumia’s vision for governance, describing him as a leader committed to the rule of law, institutional strengthening, and economic transformation.
He said their visit was both symbolic and practical—to commend Dr Bawumia and to assure him of the legal fraternity within the party’s readiness to support the NPP’s agenda ahead of the 2028 general election.
He expressed appreciation to the Electoral Commission of Ghana and the Ghana Police Service for their professionalism and effective supervision of the election, which ensured a free, fair, and orderly process.
As the party looks ahead to the 2028 elections, Mr Marfo called on all NPP members and well-meaning Ghanaians to rally behind Dr Bawumia, stressing that unity would be critical to the party’s chances of returning to power.
He noted that lawyers within the party play a critical role in shaping policy, defending democratic processes and safeguarding constitutional governance, adding that they were prepared to contribute their expertise toward the party’s programmes and campaign activities.
He expressed confidence that with collective effort and cohesion, the NPP would be well-positioned to secure victory in the 2028 presidential polls.
Bawumia thanks legal directorate for loyalty shown
Dr Bawumia, in response, thanked the group for the visit and their continued loyalty to the party.
He emphasised the importance of legal professionals in sustaining Ghana’s democratic system and ensuring adherence to constitutional principles.
He also reiterated his commitment to policies aimed at economic growth, digital transformation, and improving public sector efficiency, stressing that a strong legal framework is essential for development and investor confidence.
“As they say, King Gary and all of you who are present, members of the legal directorate, let me just say a very big thank you to you, first of all, for taking the time. You’re all very busy people, very, very busy, so taking the time to come and wish me congratulations in the first place is something I really appreciate. God bless all of you,”Dr Bawumia stated.
Beyond the congratulations, the former Vice President and the NPP presidential candidte for the 2024 general election, commended the Legal Directorate for what he described as their “solid work” in defending the party’s parliamentary seats in court.
According to him, the legal team successfully protected several constituencies that the party could have lost through legal challenges.
He noted that without the intervention of the lawyers, the party’s representation in Parliament would have significantly reduced.
He therefore credited the team for standing firm in court at a time he said there had been attempts to weaken the party through litigation.
Party unity
Dr Bawumia also emphasised the need for unity within the NPP, stating that the internal campaign period was over and the focus must now shift to reconciliation.
He said politics is ultimately about numbers and urged party members to come together, strengthen internal cohesion, and then reach out to a broader base of supporters.
Dr Bawumia revealed that one of his major priorities this year is to promote unity and reconciliation across the party.
In that regard, he called on the legal directorate to play a central role in the reconciliation process as mechanisms are put in place to heal divisions after the contest.
Looking ahead to the 2028 general election, Dr Bawumia further appealed to the lawyers to contribute to shaping the party’s policy platforms.
He said their involvement should go beyond legal advice to include broader input on policy direction, ensuring proposals are carefully scrutinised before being presented to the public.
Dr Bawumia concluded by appealing to the lawyers and lawmakers that their expertise would be relied upon as the party works to strengthen its structures, rebuild unity, and prepare for future elections.
January 31 polls
Dr Bawumia emerged as the winner of the NPP presidential primary after securing 110,643 votes, representing 56.48 per cent of the total valid votes cast.
His closest contender, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, placed second with 46,554 votes, representing 23.76 per cent.
Dr Bryan Acheampong came third with 36,303 votes, accounting for 18.53 per cent of the votes.
Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum finished fourth with 1,999 votes, representing 1.02 per cent, while Kwabena Agyei Agyepong came fifth after polling 402 votes, representing 0.21 per cent.
