Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has paid separate visits to Mavis Hawa Koomson and Akua Afriyie at their residences following violent attacks on them during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun on Friday, 11 July.
The visit followed what the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has described as a coordinated attacks allegedly by individuals affiliated with the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Madam Koomson, who previously served as Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development and was also the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, was among several NPP officials reportedly targeted during the disruption of the rerun election.
According to the Minority in Parliament, the attack on her formed part of a broader pattern of electoral violence aimed at intimidating NPP figures and disrupting the democratic process.
Dr Bawumia’s visit was widely viewed as an expression of solidarity and concern for her well-being.
The former Vice President has expressed deep disappointment over the incident and called for a thorough investigation.
“Such violence has no place in Ghana’s democracy, and we must ensure that those responsible are held accountable,” Dr Bawumia said.
Visit to Akua Afriyie
The former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia also consoled the Akua Afriyie, the NPP parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North.
Several NPP polling agents who were assaulted during that constituency parliamentary rerun.

The incident, which reportedly perpetrated by individuals affiliated with the governing NDC, sparked widespread condemnation and renewed concerns over electoral violence in Ghana.
Dr Bawumia visited the injured at a private medical facility in Accra yesterday Sunday and expressed solidarity with the victims.
He commended the victims for their courage in the face of what he described as “unprovoked and unacceptable violence.”
The former Vice President also condemned the attacks as a threat to Ghana’s democracy and reaffirmed his party’s commitment to peaceful and lawful electoral processes.
“No one should suffer such brutality for simply participating in a democratic process.
“We will ensure their hospital bills are taken care of, and that justice is pursued through the appropriate channels,” Dr stated.
The Ablekuma North rerun was marred by chaotic scenes, with reports of assaults on party agents, journalists, and even former Members of Parliament.
The NPP has since called for a full-scale investigation into the incident, while the Minority in Parliament described the violence as a coordinated assault on the nation’s democratic institutions.
