The Ghana Football Association (GFA), in consultation with key stakeholders, has announced the appointment of Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach of the Black Stars.
The seasoned Portuguese manager takes over the senior national team as Ghana intensifies preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be hosted in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
Queiroz arrives with a wealth of experience, having managed some of the biggest teams and football nations in the world. His résumé includes stints with top clubs such as Real Madrid and Manchester United, as well as national teams including Portugal and Iran.
Widely regarded for his tactical expertise, Queiroz has a strong track record at the FIFA World Cup. He guided South Africa to qualification for the 2002 tournament and later led Portugal to the Round of 16 at the 2010 World Cup.
He also managed Iran at the 2014 and 2018 editions, where his teams were known for their organisation and resilience against stronger opponents.
In addition to his World Cup experience, Queiroz has coached in several countries across different continents, including Egypt, Oman, Japan, and Qatar. His global exposure is expected to bring a new level of discipline and strategic depth to the Black Stars.
The GFA believes his appointment will provide the leadership needed to enhance the team’s competitiveness as they prepare for one of football’s biggest stages.
Queiroz is expected to begin his role immediately, focusing on building a strong squad and fine-tuning tactics ahead of the tournament, which kicks off on June 11, 2026.
Ghana faces a tough challenge in the group stage, beginning with a clash against Panama on June 17, 2026, in Toronto, Canada. The Black Stars will also take on England and Croatia in what promises to be a highly competitive group.
With his vast experience and proven ability to manage at the highest level, Queiroz is expected to play a crucial role in shaping Ghana’s World Cup campaign and guiding the team toward a successful outing in 2026.
