In a shocking turn of events, two prominent members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mavis Hawa Koomson and the parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, were allegedly assaulted by unidentified macho men during a tense political activity in the constituency.
The incident reportedly occurred on Friday, July 11, 2025, during what eyewitnesses described as a heated confrontation involving rival factions within the NPP.
According to reports, the two women—both of whom are influential political figures—were physically harassed and verbally abused by a group of heavily built men whose identities remain unknown.
Hawa Koomson was reportedly in the area to support party engagements. Akua Afriyie, a former MP for Ablekuma North, was also in attendance when the confrontation erupted.
Witnesses claim the macho men disrupted the proceedings and caused panic among supporters and party executives present at the scene.
Some party faithful believe the assault was a calculated attempt to intimidate certain factions ahead of an impending primary rerun in the constituency.
Videos and images circulating on social media show chaotic scenes at the St. Peter’s polling station, disrupting the process and unleashing violence on political figures and journalists.
Akua Afriyie, a female party agent, was severely assaulted during the incident. Both reportedly suffered facial injuries, with visible swelling.
The NPP contested the result, citing irregularities and unaccounted polling station results. According to the party, 19 polling stations had results that were either not collated or not certified by the EC, creating a cloud of uncertainty over the final outcome.
The matter was taken to court, and the High Court ordered the Electoral Commission (EC) to ensure full collation of all valid votes.
Despite the directive, the EC admitted it had challenges retrieving results from the 19 disputed polling stations, leading to a stalemate.
To resolve the impasse and restore electoral integrity, the commission announced a rerun in the affected polling stations.
Today, July 11, 2025, over 6,800 eligible voters across the 19 polling centers are expected to cast their ballots once again.
