Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has urged party delegates to base their decisions in the upcoming primaries on a candidate’s ability to secure power in 2028 rather than on personal connections or family ties.
The NPP is scheduled to elect its flagbearer in two weeks ahead of the 2028 general election.
Chairman Wontumi made the appeal during Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign tour of the Ejura Sekyedumase Constituency on Saturday, January 17.
He argued that Dr. Bawumia remains the party’s strongest option for leading the NPP back into government.
Wontumi emphasised that delegates must prioritise the party’s chances of reclaiming political power when making their choice.
“If it is power that we want, then it shouldn’t be about the relationships we have with people, but about the person who can help us win the 2028 election,” he said.
Delegates of the NPP are expected to head to the polls to elect a flag bearer for the 2028 general election.
Although five aspirants are in the running, developments so far suggest the contest is shaping up into a two-man race between the party’s 2024 flag bearer and former Vice-President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong.
