Students of Odoben Senior High School in the Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa District of the Central Region were left stranded after a contractor locked up an eight-unit classroom block over an unpaid debt dating back to 2012.
According to reports, the contractor, who constructed the building more than a decade ago, stormed the school premises early Monday morning and took possession of the facility, preventing both teachers and students from entering.
The action is said to be a response to the government’s failure to settle the payment for the project, which was completed during the administration of a previous district assembly.
Despite several appeals and promises over the years, the contractor claims he has yet to receive his due compensation.
The situation has caused significant disruption to academic activities, as students have been left without adequate classrooms to continue lessons.
Some were seen loitering around the campus, while others sought temporary shelter in nearby uncompleted structures.
Teachers expressed frustration over the development, describing it as a setback to teaching and learning.
District education officials are yet to comment publicly on the incident. However, sources say the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the District Assembly have been notified and discussions are underway to resolve the matter.
Parents and residents of Odoben have also called on the government to step in immediately, warning that the situation could disrupt the ongoing academic calendar if left unresolved.
