The University of Ghana, through its Health Services Directorate, has issued a public advisory following a recent spike in COVID-19 cases on and around the university campus.

Dated June 23, 2025, the notice confirms both suspected and confirmed cases, prompting the immediate reactivation of the university’s COVID-19 response protocols.

As part of the renewed safety measures, university authorities are urging all students, staff, and visitors to remain alert and adhere strictly to preventive guidelines. These include:

  • Wearing face masks, particularly in enclosed or crowded areas
  • Frequent handwashing with soap or the use of alcohol-based hand sanitisers
  • Maintaining a physical distance of at least one metre
  • Avoiding large gatherings unless absolutely necessary
  • Ensuring proper ventilation in offices, classrooms, and other shared spaces
  • Staying home and seeking medical attention when experiencing flu-like symptoms

To curb potential community transmission, the Health Directorate has resumed screening and triage procedures at campus health facilities.

The university also reassures the community that it is closely monitoring the situation and will provide regular updates.

The notice ends with a reminder: “Let us work together to protect ourselves and our community.”

More on COVID-19

COVID-19, caused by the novel coronavirus first identified in Wuhan, China, stands for “Coronavirus Disease 2019” (CO for corona, VI for virus, D for disease). Previously referred to as ‘2019-nCoV,’ it has since caused global concern due to its contagious nature.

The virus spreads mainly through respiratory droplets released when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or breathes heavily.

These droplets fall quickly to the ground or surfaces and can infect others who are nearby or who touch contaminated surfaces and then touch their face.

Most COVID-19 cases are mild to moderate, with common symptoms including fever, cough, and shortness of breath.

However, more serious infections may lead to pneumonia, breathing difficulties, or in rare cases, death.

Because its symptoms overlap with those of the flu and common cold, testing is essential for accurate diagnosis.
