The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that a parliamentary by-election will be held in the Ayawaso East Constituency on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
The election follows the death of the area’s Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure.
In a statement issued on January 16, the Commission noted that the seat became vacant after the legislator’s passing, and that a by-election is required under Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution.
Nominations are now open for interested candidates. Forms may be downloaded from the EC’s website from January 16 to February 11, and submitted at the Ayawaso East Municipal Office in North Ridge between February 9 and February 11, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm daily.
Completed forms must be submitted by the candidate or by the proposer or seconder. Each form must be endorsed by two registered voters and supported by 18 others. Filing fees are GHC10,000 per candidate, or GHC7,500 for female aspirants and persons with disabilities. All forms must be submitted in quadruplicate.
The EC urged all prospective candidates and political parties to follow the stated procedures to ensure a smooth and credible by-election.
Mahama Naser Toure, a fourth-term MP who served on several key parliamentary committees, passed away on January 4, 2026, at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital after a period of illness.
