The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has set 13th April, 2024, to elect the party’s Parliamentary candidate for the impending by-election following the death of the Member of Parliament and Deputy Finance Minister, Dr John Ampontuah Kumah.

The lawmaker reportedly died on March 7 after battling with multiple myeloma, a type of cancer that affects plasma cells, a type of white blood cells responsible for producing antibodies to help fight infections. The deceased family has since held one-week observance of the 45-year old.

The General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong in a statement on Friday (March 29, 2024) announced the opening of nomination is Tuesday, April 2, to Thursday, April 4, 2024, when the nomination will close at the constituency party office.

He noted that an aspiring parliamentary candidate shall procure Nomination Forms after the payment of a non-refundable application fee of GHȼ3,000 in bankers draft in favour of the New Patriotic Party National Headquarters, Accra.

“To successfully file the nomination, an APC shall pay a non-refundable filing fee of thirty-five thousand Ghana cedis (GHC35, 000.00) in Bankers Draft in favour of the New Patriotic Party National Headquarters, Accra.”

However, Mr. Kodua said Women, Youth and Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) who wants to aspire to a higher political office will enjoy a 50% rebate on the filing fees, stating this means they will be required to pay a non-refundable filing fee of seventeen thousand and five hundred Ghana cedis – (GHC 17,500.00).

“For the avoidance of doubt, a youth is a person whose age is between 18 and 40 years” he emphasized.  The NPP Chief scribe added no individual shall be denied access to purchase nomination forms.

Meanwhile, the party has announced that the Election Committee shall comprise the following persons: a. Mr. Danquah Smith Butey- Chairman b. Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako – Vice Chairman c. Hon. Patricia Appiagyei d. Mad. Martha Kodua e. Mr. Evans Nimako – Secretary f. Chairperson of the Constituency Council of Elders; g. All Constituency Executives (Ex-officio members).

According to the General Secretary, the Party has also approved detailed Rules and Regulations to govern the conduct of the parliamentary primary election which would be made available to stakeholders.
