The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has condemned the recent assault on firefighters.
In a statement issued on September 10, 2024, by the Head of Public Relations, Divisional Officer (DO) II Desmond E. Ackah, he revealed that two separate incidents had occurred, leaving one firefighter seriously injured and another traumatised while on duty.
The first incident, he reported, took place last Tuesday when Assistant Divisional Officer (ADO) Abdul Aziz Annor was assaulted by a driver and his mate while replenishing the station’s fire truck at the La Palm T-junction in Accra.
“ADO II Annor sustained a fractured ankle and is currently receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital”, he stated.
He further mentioned that the two suspects involved in the assault had been arrested and granted bail yesterday, September 9, with two sureties each of Gh¢5000.
In the second incident, he explained that firefighters from the Dansoman Fire Station were verbally and physically attacked by residents last Thursday while attending to a fire near the Dansoman roundabout.
“The misunderstanding occurred when the Fire Truck temporarily left to replenish water. Despite the attack, the firefighters, with the help of two additional fire trucks, managed to control and extinguish the fire, preventing damage to nearby properties.
Mr. Ackah assured the public that the matter had been referred to the Dansoman Police, and investigations were ongoing to ensure the perpetrators were brought to justice.
He reminded the public that assaulting firefighters was illegal and would be met with strict legal actions.
He also warned that the service would defend its personnel and ensure that anyone who assaults firefighters faces the full force of the law.
