The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has announced a nationwide compliance exercise set to begin on Wednesday, December 18, 2025, aimed at ensuring that all vehicles on Ghana’s roads are fitted with functional, GNFS-certified portable fire extinguishers.
The operation will be spearheaded by the GNFS Fire Safety Compliance Taskforce, working in partnership with the National Road Safety Authority and the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department.
In a press statement issued on December 16, the Service said officers would carry out spot safety inspections at selected locations across the country. Vehicles that meet the requirements will be issued with certification tags, while motorists without approved fire extinguishers will receive education on the regulations and guidance on how to comply.
The GNFS underscored that a certified and readily accessible fire extinguisher can make the crucial difference between a minor, manageable incident and a major fire disaster.
Beyond inspections, the exercise will include engagements with transport unions and driver associations to encourage the purchase of serviceable extinguishers, proper installation in vehicles, and basic training on their safe and effective use.
Motorists have also been advised to ensure their vehicles are equipped with other essential safety items such as warning triangles and first-aid kits to improve overall road safety.
Reaffirming its mandate to protect lives and property through enforcement, education and prevention, the GNFS stressed the importance of swift action during fire emergencies.
“Every second counts when a fire breaks out,” the Service said, calling on drivers and vehicle owners to cooperate fully with officers throughout the compliance exercise.
