Ghana is in a state of mourning following the passing of Dr. Mustapha Ahmed, the former Minister of Youth and Sports in the Mahama administration, on Wednesday, February 7, 2024.
The 63-year-old Dentist had been battling with some undisclosed condition for some time, bringing a premature end to his illustrious career as a soldier, medical officer, and politician.
He had reportedly travelled to India to seek for medical intervention but it was not successful.
Dr. Ahmed served as the Sports Minister of Ghana’s fourth republic for a brief period of eight months, starting in June 2015 during the John Mahama administration. He succeeded Mahama Ayariga, who had moved to lead the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation in January 2016.
Prior to his ministerial appointment, Dr. Mustapha Ahmed had a remarkable career as a Member of Parliament (MP), representing the Ayawaso East Constituency from 2001 to 2013 under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) later moved to Ayawaso North after it was carved out from his previous constituency.
Apart from being actively involved in politics, Dr. Ahmed was a retired military officer, a dentist and estate developer.
He played a pivotal role at the 37 military hospital in Accra before retiring, after which he established a dental clinic at Maamobi near Nima.
His clinic not only served the community but also became a center for philanthropic work, demonstrating Dr. Ahmed’s commitment to the betterment of society.
Dr. Mustapha Ahmed, survived by his wife and three children, leaving behind a legacy marked by his dedication to public service, his contributions to healthcare, and his unwavering commitment to community welfare.
He will be remembered as a highly respected figure who made significant contributions to both the political and societal spheres of Ghana.
In accordance with his Islamic faith, Dr. Mustapha Ahmed will be laid to rest according to Islamic rites.
The nation mourns the loss of a remarkable individual who has made an indelible impact on Ghana’s political and economic landscape.
