The Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Alban Sumana Bagbin, has urged all Ghanaians to work together for a free, fair and credible election in the upcoming December 7 general election. According to him, the country cannot achieve a free, fair and credible election without trust and therefore we must work together to build trust in ourselves and our institutions.
“Every single person matters, and everything institution of governance matters. Good governance cannot be the responsibility of any person, institution or group of people. It is a responsibility of all stakeholders” he stated.
Addressing stakeholders at the 2nd Speaker’s Seminal Lecture on August 31, 2024, at the University for Development Studies (UDS) in Tamale, Mr. Bagbin emphasized that trust is key ingredient in human relationship but however lamented that this ingredient is gradually eluding us.
“Ghana can’t achieve this goal if we just stand and stare or adopt the wait and see attitude. Things just don’t happen perchance. It is people who make them happen” the Speaker stressed.
Mr. Bagbin revealed that, Parliament has taken a proactive approach to reach out to all stakeholders to work together to ensure a peaceful election come December 2024.
As the bedrock of every democracy, he indicated Parliament recognizes the paramount importance of safeguarding the integrity of our electoral process and the conduct of every actor in the process till the declaration of the results and thereafter.
This year’s seminar was held on the theme: “Working together: Building trust for a free, fair, credible and peaceful elections: The Role of Stakeholders.”
Meanwhile, Security Consultant, Prof Kwesi Aning, Mr. Kofi Bentil, Private Legal Practitioner, and Vice President of IMANI Ghana and Mr. Samuel Tetteh, Deputy Commissioner, representing the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, took turns to address the gathering on issues that bothers on the electoral process, peace and security ahead of the general elections.
