The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) is preparing for a critical emergency meeting to decide on its next course of action following the suspension of the vehicle importation duty waiver for public sector doctors and dentists.

A communication sent to GMA members indicated that the emergency NEC meeting would be held immediately after an urgent discussion with the Minister of Health.

The outcome of this ministerial engagement will play a key role in shaping the Association’s next steps.

Doctors’ vehicles stranded at ports

A major concern for the GMA is the fate of members’ vehicles currently stuck at the port due to the waiver suspension.

These vehicles are accumulating demurrage charges and face possible confiscation.

The tax waiver, which has been in effect since July 2024 as part of the doctors’ and dentists’ Conditions of Service, was a key agreement meant to ease the financial burden on public sector medical professionals.

Frustration over unfulfilled promises

The NEC’s decision to call an emergency meeting highlights the urgency of the situation.

Previous attempts to resolve the matter, including a formal letter to the Minister of Health on February 20, 2025, and engagements with relevant stakeholders, have so far not produced the desired results.

Despite initial positive assurances, no concrete action has been taken.

GMA leadership vows to fight for members

The leadership of the GMA, including President Dr. Frank Serebour and General Secretary Dr. Richard Selormey, who co-signed the letter to members, has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the full resumption of the vehicle importation tax waiver.

The Association is determined to secure the rights and benefits of its members as outlined in the signed Conditions of Service.

The results of the emergency NEC meeting and the agreed next steps will be communicated to all members in due course.
