The Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways, Alhassan Suhuyini, has announced the disbursement of GH¢5 billion to pay road contractors.

This comes on the back of rigorous validation processes by the government.

The Deputy Minister, who doubles as the Member of Parliament for Tamale North Constituency, said the payment is part of efforts to clear the over Ghc40 billion arrears in the road sector.

According to him, this is the largest single payment to road contractors at a particular time in the life of any government.

The Deputy Minister, in a Facebook post on Thursday morning (October 16, 2025), stated that this is achieved without borrowing.

“The government, after a vigorous validation of claims, is disbursing GH¢5 billion to road contractors as part of efforts to clear the over GH¢40 billion arrears in the road sector.

‎”No loans, no commercial bonds. Just prudent internal generation and application of tax revenues,” he stressed.

‎Mr Suhuyini believes that this will ensure the return of most contractors to abandoned road projects and the initiation of new ones. ‎

He further criticised the John Mahama administration for not noticing that the NDC-led government is in a hurry to get somewhere great.

‎”So you have not yet noticed JM is in a hurry to somewhere great without having to say so? Just actions! “Unprecedented!” he queried.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, sometime in April 2025, firmly stated that no payments would be made to government contractors until a comprehensive audit of outstanding arrears was completed by the Auditor-General.

The audit, which covers GH¢67 billion in arrears owed by 23 ministries, is part of a broader effort to ensure fiscal responsibility and transparency in public financial management.
