The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Mr. Samuel Abu Jinapor, has announced that 50 new Community Mining Schemes will be inaugurated before the end of 2024.
This addition will bring the total number of operational schemes to 75, with 25 schemes already functioning.
Update on the fight against galamsey
Speaking at a media briefing on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, Minister Jinapor reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to tackling illegal mining, also known as “galamsey,” and sought the media’s support in this fight.
He dismissed claims that the government had abandoned the battle, emphasizing that the approach is anchored on two key pillars: reformation and enforcement.
Enforcement and reformation strategies
Mr. Jinapor explained that enforcement includes measures such as deploying the “Operation Halt Taskforce,” decommissioning excavators, and imprisoning convicted illegal miners.
The reformation aspect, he noted, is aimed at empowering displaced illegal miners, primarily through initiatives like the Community Mining Scheme, improving the licensing regime, and introducing mercury-free mining equipment.
Collaborative efforts in the renewed fight
The Minister underscored the importance of inter-agency collaboration in the fight against galamsey.
He highlighted ongoing engagements with regional ministers, National Security, the Ghana Armed Forces, and other allied institutions to ensure strict enforcement of the laws against illegal mining.
The Minerals Commission has also been directed to accelerate the certification process for the Community Mining Scheme, which is endorsed by the World Bank as a more sustainable mineral exploitation model.
Appeal for media support
Jinapor acknowledged the crucial role of the media in ensuring the success of the fight against galamsey.
He appealed to media practitioners to take an active role in promoting anti-galamsey messages and to avoid politicizing the issue, as its impact affects all Ghanaians, regardless of political affiliation.
Mr. Jinapor also welcomed suggestions from the media, expressing the Ministry’s openness to incorporating new ideas into the action plan to protect the country’s forest reserves and ensure the long-term sustainability of Ghana’s natural resources.
