As part of efforts to enhance efficiency and manage increasing cargo volumes, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has commissioned 15 new SINOTRUK HOWO trucks at the Tema Port.

Of the 15 trucks, which come with 60-ton flatbed trailers, three are rated at 400 horsepower, while the remaining 12 have 430 horsepower.

The commissioning ceremony, held at the port, was attended by officials from GPHA, Ecobank Ghana, and Zonda Tec Ghana Ltd. The new trucks are part of GPHA’s broader modernisation drive to improve cargo handling, reduce turnaround times, and boost the port’s competitiveness in the sub-region.

GPHA Director General, Brigadier-General Paul Seidu Tanye-Kulono, underscored the importance of continued investment in logistics infrastructure.

“These trucks will significantly enhance our cargo handling capacity, which is vital for maintaining Tema Port’s position as a key maritime hub in West Africa,” he said.

He stressed the need for an effective maintenance culture to extend the trucks’ lifespan and support efficient trade facilitation.

Tema Port Director, Mr. Tebon Zuma Esq., noted that the trucks meet international safety and emissions standards, reinforcing GPHA’s commitment to sustainability. He revealed that an additional 15 trucks would arrive within three weeks, with a total of 100 trucks and over a dozen reach stackers expected this year.

“These trucks are more than vehicles—they reflect our commitment to operational excellence and customer satisfaction,” he said. “They will streamline container handling, cargo transfers, and internal haulage, all critical to port productivity.”

Mr. Zuma added that the authority is investing in continuous staff training to ensure the new fleet is maintained to the highest professional standards.

He also commended the procurement and engineering teams, as well as Ecobank Ghana, for their roles in realising the project.

Industry stakeholders have welcomed the development, noting that enhanced logistics will benefit the entire supply chain and reduce trade bottlenecks.

The new trucks will begin operations immediately, marking another milestone in GPHA’s mission to deliver world-class port services.
