Former Member of Parliament for Savelugu Constituency, Hajia Mary Salifu Boforo, has passed away. She died on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at the age of 74.
The former National Democratic Congress (NDC) lawmaker reportedly died in the Greater Accra Region, where she has been living her private life after serving the nation.
She will be laid to rest in line with Islamic tradition on Monday, December 15, 2025, at the Savelugu public cemetery.
Hajia Mary Salifu Boforo is one of the longest-serving Members of Parliament under the Fourth Republic. She represented the Savelugu constituency in Parliament from 1997 to 2017 when she retired.
Born on 25th February, 1951, the late Boforo, before becoming a Member of Parliament, owned a bakery and was also into the farming business. She had vocational training at the National Vocational Training Institute in 1972.
She became the First Deputy Majority Chief Whip in 2014.
Hajia Mary Salifu Boforo was a strong advocate for the empowerment of women and children’s affairs as she served on the Ghana Developing Communities Association (GDCA) as the lead advocate and chairperson of Ghana’s Parliamentary Women’s Caucus.
She published a report in Parliament which stated: “The fight for equality between men and women goes beyond the case made for social justice, but rather a fundamental human right that must be achieved.”
Meanwhile, the current Member of Parliament for Savelugu, Hajia Fatahiya Abdul Aziz, has paid a gloomy tribute to the late Mary Boforo.
She said Ghana has lost a dedicated public servant whose commitment to service and nation-building will be remembered forever.
“Hon. Mary Salifu Boforo served as Member of Parliament for Savelugu for over 20 years, distinguishing herself as a strong voice for women, community development, and inclusive governance” she stated.
