The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Ghana, with support from the European Union Delegation in Ghana, on Monday, October 27, 2025, began a three-day capacity-building training on migration reporting for selected Journalists from the northern part of the country in the Ashanti Region.
The training is organised under the “ATUU – A Ghanaian-European Safe and Prosperous People’s Mobility Project on Migration Governance,” with support from the European Union Delegation in Ghana.
The initiative aims to build the capacity of journalists and media practitioners from the five regions in the North to report accurately, ethically, and with a human-centered approach on migration-related issues, and to further train others in this space.
In a welcome address, the IOM Programme Support Officer, Camilla Taranta, stated that the training was designed to enhance the participants’ capacity to report on migration with nuance, integrity, and empathy.
“Over the next three days, you will examine how to capture misinformation, fragment voices, and promote narratives that reflect the complexity and dignity of your mobility. Importantly, this is not just training; it is an investment in sustainability.
“Through the training of trainers’ model, we aim to create a multiplier event, enabling you to share your knowledge and skills with peers across the media landscape,” she stated.
She believes this can foster a community of companies that champion responsible migration reporting in Ghana and beyond.
“Let us use this opportunity to learn more from one another, to challenge assumptions, and to reaffirm our shared commitment to truth, fairness and the fundamental right of all people on the move,” she emphasised.
Meanwhile, the first day session highlighted migration dynamics and Ghana’s context, Migration and the role of the media, addressing issues of biases and stereotypes, Migration governance, and Migration Terminology and Fact-checking using the IOM and UN terminologies.
The participants were also taken through misinformation and disinformation in migration and the mechanisms to combat migration myths and misconceptions.
