Former Minister for Finance, Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta, has been reportedly arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
According to a public notice issued by his legal representative, Justice Kusi-Minkah Premo Esq., the arrest is related to his current immigration status in the United States.
Mr. Ofori-Atta’s legal team has confirmed they are in active contact with ICE authorities.
They maintain that the former Minister is a law-abiding individual and is fully cooperating with the agency.
The defense team highlighted that Mr. Ofori-Atta has a pending petition for adjustment of status.
Under U.S. immigration law, such a petition typically authorizes an individual to remain in the country legally even after their initial visa has expired.
The legal team expects the matter to be resolved “expeditiously.”
Mr. Ofori-Atta has been on Interpol Red Notice following a declaration by Ghana’s Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) that he was a “fugitive from justice.” since June 2025.
He faces 78 counts of corruption-related charges, including allegations regarding the SML/GRA revenue assurance contract and the National Cathedral project.
Ghana officially transmitted an extradition request to the U.S. Department of Justice to have him returned to Ghana on December 18, 2024.
Yet Mr. Ofori-Atta’s representatives have consistently stated that he is in the United States for medical treatment, specifically for prostate cancer, and has been physically unable to travel.
