Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has been released from the custody of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following a court order. Reports indicate that his bail was set at $65,000 by the presiding court.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, 8 April 2026, by his legal team in Ghana, Minkah-Premo, Osei-Bonsu, Bruce-Cathline and Partners (MPOBB), and signed by Justice Kusi-Minkah Premo, the development was confirmed.
“On 7 April 2026, Ken Ofori-Atta was released from ICE detention pursuant to judicial order. He is home with his family,” the statement noted. It added that Mr. Ofori-Atta remains committed to defending his rights through due process under U.S. law.
The statement further expressed gratitude: “He and his family remain thankful to God and all those who have offered prayers and support during this period.”
Ofori-Atta has been on Interpol Red Notice following a declaration by Ghana’s Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) that he was a “fugitive from justice.” since June 2025.
He faces 78 counts of corruption-related charges, including allegations regarding the SML/GRA revenue assurance contract and the National Cathedral project.
Ghana officially transmitted an extradition request to the U.S. Department of Justice to have him returned to Ghana on December 18, 2024.
Yet Mr. Ofori-Atta’s representatives have consistently stated that he is in the United States for medical treatment, specifically for prostate cancer, and has been physically unable to travel.
