President John Dramani Mahama has named fourteen (14) Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the Northern Region out of a total of 16 with only one woman among the lists. The nominees will now go for confirmation or otherwise by the assembly members in their respective Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) at a later date pursuant to Article 243(1) of the 1992 Constitution which states that, “There shall be a District Chief Executive for every district who shall be appointed by the President with the prior approval of not less than two-thirds majority of members of the Assembly present and voting at the meeting”.
For the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly (TaMA), President Mahama has appointed Adam Abubakar Takoro, a former Presiding Member and former Assembly member for Lamashegu South Electoral area. He comes to the portfolio with wide range of experience and expertise in the local governance sector having served as Assembly member for about two decades and over two decades working experience in the education sector rising as a classroom teacher to Assistant Director at the Tamale Metro Education office.
The President has also appointed 67years old Imoro Yakubu Kakpagu, a former Member of Parliament as the District Chief Executive for Kumbungu. He obtained his Bachelor of Public Administration degree at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) and his Local Government certificate from the Institute of Local Government Studies.
The Saboba Constituency Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, George Wumbei Bilmor, has been appointed as the DCE for the area. Mr. Sugri Muniru, a two-term Yendi Constituency Secretary of the NDC, has also been nominated as the new Yendi Municipal Chief Executive.
The Nanton district which was created in 2019 will have its first female District Chief Executive in Madam Rosina Zenabu Abdul-Rahaman if she is approved by the assembly members. She is a former Assembly woman for Jegung Electoral Area and the Girl Child Education Coordinator for the Sagnarigu Municipal of the Ghana Education Service.
For Karaga district, Iddrisu Yakubu Dasana has been nominated as the District Chief Executive and Azindow Hamzah Moabalyn for Mion district. In the Nanumba North Municipal and Nanumba South District Assemblies, Abdul Samed Hamza and Musah Abdul Rashid respectively have been selected as the Chief Executives.
Mr. Abdula Imoro Gong and Mr. Alhassan Fuseini when approved by their respective assemblies will become the Municipal Chief Executives for Sagnarigu and Savelugu accordingly.
Meanwhile, Seidu Braimah and George Lakob Tanei are also the nominees heading to the Tolon and Zabzugu districts as the new District Chief Executives when approved.
