President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the immediate recall of Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed from his position as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria following allegations of voter inducement during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Ayawaso East parliamentary primary held on Saturday.
The directive was announced in a statement issued by the presidency on the night of February 7, 2026, after controversy emerged from the constituency primary in which Baba Jamal contested and was declared the winner.
In several media interviews, some voters claimed they received television sets from a candidate. Responding in his own interview, Baba Jamal said he saw nothing wrong with distributing gifts, noting that he had done so on many occasions and therefore did not consider it improper if such items were given out on Saturday.
According to the Presidency, the recall was prompted by allegations that some delegates were induced during the party’s internal election.
The statement, signed by Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, indicated that although accusations were made against multiple aspirants, Baba Jamal was the only serving public officer among them.
“The President noted that, while the allegations of vote buying were made against several candidates who contested the primary, Baba Jamal was the only serving public officer among them,” the statement said.
The recall takes immediate effect, and the Minister for Foreign Affairs has been directed to initiate the necessary administrative and diplomatic procedures to implement the decision.
The controversy followed the circulation of social media footage showing delegates allegedly receiving 32-inch television sets believed to have been distributed by Baba Jamal’s campaign team.
