Victims of Kantamanto and Adum markets fires have lauded members of the Minority New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Parliament for their support in times of need.
This was after the Minority Leader, Osahen Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, yesterday led his members to extend a heartfelt gesture of support to traders affected by the recent fire outbreak at Kantamanto Market in the Greater Accra Region, donating GH¢200,000 to assist victims in rebuilding their livelihoods.
Another GH¢200,000 was donated by the Minority to Adum market victims in Kumasi earlier on Monday, totalling GH¢400,000.
Accompanied by Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Second Deputy Minority Whip Jerry Ahmed Shaib, and others, the NPP MPs were warmly welcomed by market women and traders, who applauded their show of solidarity.
Speaking after the donation, Osahen Afenyo-Markin described the contribution as a symbol of empathy and unity during a time of great distress.
He acknowledged that while the amount might not fully compensate for the traders’ losses, it was meant to ease their immediate burden and reassure them that they are not alone.
“We cannot sit back and do nothing while fellow Ghanaians suffer. This is not the end — we will continue to stand by you,” he assured.
The Minority Leader also called for peace and tolerance among the traders, urging them to avoid political divisiveness.
He emphasised that political power is temporary, but national unity and compassion must always prevail.
A representative of the affected traders, Aikins Boakye Mensah, expressed deep gratitude to the Minority Caucus for their timely intervention.
He pledged that the funds would be used responsibly to support the victims in restarting their businesses.
Minority donates GH¢200,000 to victims of Adum market fire
On Monday, the Minority Caucus extended a similar helping hand to victims of the recent fire outbreak at the Adum Blue Light Market in Kumasi, donating GH¢200,000 to support affected traders.
The donation was presented during a brief ceremony in Kumasi, where Minority Leader Osahen Afenyo-Markin sympathised with the traders who lost their goods and livelihoods in the devastating blaze.
The Minority Leader who is also the MP for Effutu called on the government to step in with additional support, just as it had done in past instances of disaster.
He specifically recommended that funds from the Contingency Fund be utilized to provide immediate relief to the victims and help them recover.
“The government must show the same level of urgency and compassion as it has in other similar tragedies,” he emphasized.
Receiving the donation on behalf of the affected traders, Mr. Joseph Bobie Ansah, Chairman of the market traders, thanked the Minority Caucus for their timely intervention and solidarity during this challenging period.
“We are deeply grateful for this support. It will go a long way to ease the burden on our members who have lost everything,” Mr. Ansah said.
The gesture by the Minority Caucus has been widely welcomed as a show of unity and concern for ordinary Ghanaians in times of crisis.
