Fifteen Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Eastern Region who recently endorsed Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia have strongly dismissed what they described as ‘false and divisive’ claims made by Dr Bryan Acheampong, a New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful.
Dr Bryan Acheampong, who is also the MP for Abetifi, had claimed that some of the MPs who endorsed Dr Bawumia later called to assure him of their support, saying their endorsement of the former Vice President ahead ofthe NPP’s 31st January, 2026 presidential primary was a facade.
However, in a statement jointly signed and issued by all the MPs on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, the lawmakers accused Bryan of fabricating stories to undermine their public endorsement of Dr Bawumia’s presidential bid.
“There is absolutely no truth in Hon. Bryan Acheampong’s assertion that some of us privately called him after our press conference to downplay our declaration. We challenge him, in the spirit of truth and accountability, to publicly name the MPs he alleges contacted him,” the statement said.
The MPs also dared Bryan to show proof of his claims that he exchanged text messages with Dr Bawumia over the matter.
“We further challenge Hon. Bryan Acheampong to provide evidence of the alleged text message exchanges. Failure to produce this evidence will only expose his claim as a deliberate falsehood designed to hoodwink delegates,” the MPs stressed.
The pro-Bawumia MPs are Nana Ampaw Kwame Addo Frempong, Kingsley Agyemang, Kofi Ahenkorah Marfo, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, Sammi Awuku, Ida Adjoa Asiedu and Kwame Appiah Kodua.
The rest are Laurette Korkor Asante, Duke Ofori-Atta, Alexander Agyare, Michael Okyere Baafi, Frank Annoh Dompreh, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Frank Asiedu Bekoe and Charles Asuako Owiredu.
According to them, Bryan, a former Food and Agriculture Minister, has been sowing seeds of division by telling polling station members that monies meant for them during the 2024 general election were withheld by constituency executives and MPs.
“Campaign funds disbursed in the Eastern Region during the 2024 elections did not come from the personal resources of Hon. Bryan Acheampong. These funds were contributions from party financiers and businessmen who supported the presidential campaign of Dr. Bawumia. Hon. Acheampong, in his capacity as Regional Campaign Coordinator, merely facilitated their disbursement,” the statement clarified.
The MPs further alleged that in many instances, the monies Acheampong distributed were less than what had originally been agreed upon, forcing them to use personal resources to ensure the campaign’s success.
They called on the central campaign team of Dr. Bawumia’s 2024 bid to step in and clarify how much money was allocated to Acheampong for operations in the Eastern Region, and how it was meant to be used.
“Transparency on this matter is necessary to put an end to the distortions and to protect the integrity of the campaign,” the MPs stressed.
The Eastern Region MPs maintained their loyalty to Dr. Bawumia and demanded that Bryan Acheampong retract his allegations.
“We consider Hon. Bryan Acheampong’s allegations as baseless, divisive, and calculated to serve his personal agenda. We therefore call on him to retract his false claims immediately and desist from any further attempts to undermine the unity and integrity of our great party,” the MPs declared.
