The value of mobile money transactions in Ghana rose sharply to GH¢518.8 billion in August 2026, underscoring the growing importance of digital payments and mobile financial services in the country’s economy.
Data from the Bank of Ghana’s September 2026 Summary of Economic and Financial Data show that the value of transactions processed through mobile money platforms increased from GH¢354.1 billion in August 2025 to GH¢518.8 billion in August 2026.
The latest figure represents a year-on-year increase of approximately 46.5%, reflecting the continued expansion of mobile money usage across Ghana.
On a month-on-month basis, transaction values also increased. The GH¢518.8 billion recorded in August was higher than the GH¢509.4 billion recorded in July, indicating sustained growth in the use of mobile money for payments, transfers and other financial transactions.
Transaction volumes also remained high during the period. The Bank of Ghana recorded 1.046 billion mobile money transactions in August, compared with 969 million transactions in July.
The growth in mobile money activity coincided with an expansion in the number of registered and active accounts. Ghana had 85.8 million registered mobile money accounts as of August 2026, while active accounts stood at 26.4 million.
The mobile money agent network also expanded during the month. Active agents increased from 550,000 in July to 594,000 in August, providing a wider network through which customers can access mobile financial services.
Meanwhile, the balance of mobile money float stood at GH¢39.8 billion in August, up from GH¢39 billion recorded in July.
The latest figures highlight the scale of mobile money operations in Ghana and the growing role of digital channels in facilitating financial transactions for individuals and businesses.
According to the Bank of Ghana, an active mobile money account is one that recorded at least one transaction within the 90 days preceding the reporting period. An active agent, meanwhile, is one that carried out at least one transaction within the preceding 30 days.
