Information reaching The Custodian Online indicates that the Ghana Police Service has arrested the Chief of Cheko in the Nanton traditional area, Naa Mohammed, popularly known as “Wata” for his alleged involvement in the shooting and killing of Amadu Ahmed Ibn Shamtut last Friday, March 6, 2026, in the Nanton district.
Further information available on this portal indicates that the suspect has been airlifted to the Greater Accra Region for further investigation.
The Northern Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service had earlier indicated they were on a manhunt for the traditional ruler following preliminary investigations revealing that he allegedly fired gunshots at a group of people, leading to the killing of the deceased.
A group of selected chiefs in Tamale were seen accompanying the suspect to the regional police headquarters, where he was detained for interrogation.
Few moments later, a team of armed military personnel were seen driving into the police headquarters. The military, together with the police, later transported the suspect out of the regional police headquarters.
The Northern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Wisdom Lavoe, at a press conference on Monday, March 9, said preliminary investigations revealed that the shooting incident occurred shortly after the Independence Day celebration at the Nanton school park.
”Following the programme, a misunderstanding occurred between members of the escort team of Nanton Naa Mahamadu Bawah and some residents of Nanton” he said.
However, at 1210 hours, suspect Cheko Naa Mohammed allegedly returned to the scene and fired a pistol into a group of people, leading to the killing of the deceased, aged 35 years old.
Two individuals, identified as Sulemana Abdul Rahaman and Abdul Rahaman Oluman, also sustained gunshot wounds to the left leg and the stomach, respectively.
The injured victims were rushed to the Tamale Teaching Hospital, where they are currently receiving medical treatment. A post-mortem examination was conducted on the deceased at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, after which the body was released to the family for burial in accordance with Islamic tradition.
Meanwhile, the deceased’s family has called on the security to ensure the perpetrators face the full rigours of the law—the deceased left behind three wives and eleven children.
