The Deputy National Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rashid Tanko-Computer, has announced that the party will deploy a dedicated team of observers to monitor the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) internal presidential primaries scheduled for tomorrow, January 31, 2026.
In a statement released on social media, Mr. Tanko-Computer disclosed that the NDC has established an independent collation center to track and verify results in real-time. He characterized the move as a necessary measure to safeguard Ghana’s democratic integrity, citing a lack of confidence in the NPP’s internal electoral processes.
Mr. Tanko-Computer referenced past internal friction within the NPP which he labeled the “38.2% group” noting that previous aspirants had publicly accused one another of electoral malpractice.
He noted the reported formation of an “Anti-Rigging Squared” group by internal NPP factions as evidence of deep-seated mistrust within the ruling party. Most notably, the NDC official alleged that a significant number of ballot papers have already been thumb-printed in favor of a specific candidate ahead of the official voting day.
Mr. Tanko-Computer emphasized that the NDC’s monitoring role is intended to prevent the potential “cooking of figures.” He further suggested that the NDC is wary of possible collusion between the NPP and the Electoral Commission (EC) to influence the outcome of the internal contest.
“We are doing this in order to protect our democracy,” Tanko-Computer stated. “We need to be sure they don’t cook up figures in collaboration with their friends at the EC.”
The NPP leadership has yet to issue a formal response to these allegations. Tomorrow’s primary is expected to be a pivotal moment for the party as it seeks to elect a flagbearer for the next general election cycle.
