The Minister for Health, Dr. Okoe-Boye has announced that the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) will cover mental health conditions.
This initiative, according to him, has led to the codification of some of the most common mental health conditions in Ghana, including bipolar disorder, depression, and schizophrenia.
“For the first time, when patients visit hospitals with these mental health conditions, the state will pay for their treatment. Ghana, since the Fourth Republic, has never paid for mental health care. We have been taking steps to address this, and I believe the NHIS board will soon finalize this package,” the Minister said.
Subsidies for dialysis treatment
Dr. Okoe-Boye commended the introduction of subsidies for dialysis treatment and the government’s commitment to supporting patients with childhood cancers, mental health conditions, and other serious health challenges.
“For the first time since the Fourth Republic, the government has intervened or gotten involved with paying for kidney care,” he noted.
With the expansion of healthcare infrastructure and the integration of digital platforms, Dr. Boye reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building a resilient health system capable of responding to the needs of all Ghanaians.
