The National Media Commission (NMC) has issued a demand for an apology from Power FM, an Accra-based radio station, following an incident where the Second Lady, Samira Bawumia and the Fulani Community were allegedly insulted on air.
In a letter dated November 6, 2023, addressed to the Chief Executive Officer of Authentic Media Company, the parent company of Power FM, the NMC expressed its deep concern over the offensive broadcast that took place on November 1, 2023.
The NMC received a complaint about the broadcast, during which a commentator used gender-based and ethnic slurs to attack Mrs. Bawumia and the Fulanis.
According to the letter, such behaviour is unacceptable and detrimental to national cohesion, peace, and development.
The letter further criticized the presenter of the show, accusing them of being unprofessional and deceitful and failing to moderate the discussion and instead encouraged the commentator to continue with the offensive remarks.
“Instead of being a moderator, your presenter became a cheerleader for obscenity. We ask you to apologise to H.E. Hajia Samira Bawumia and the Fulani Community.
“We additionally ask that you apologise to the Ghanaian public whose sensibilities you breached by that broadcast,” the letter said.
The NMC gave Authentic Media Company Limited a deadline until November 11, 2023, to issue the apology.
The letter warned that failure to comply with this demand may lead to further actions being taken against the media house.
