There was chaos in Parliament on Friday, January 24, 2025, as members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus staged a symbolic protest over the delay in the re-collation of results for the Ablekuma North constituency.

Chanting “No Ablekuma North MP, no business,” the NPP Members of Parliament carried placards to highlight the lack of representation for the constituency.

This protest followed a statement by the Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, who emphasised the importance of the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo-Dampare, ensuring the security of the Electoral Commission (EC) to facilitate the re-collation of results.

“The IGP, who is the head of the Election Security Task Force, is able to provide sufficient security to enable the EC to undertake its constitutional mandate. Mr. Speaker, we raise this as a serious democratic matter because it is a blot on our otherwise peaceful democracy. This is supposed to be a 276-member chamber. We are 275. The people of Ablekuma North need representation,” he stated.

Amid chants of “No Ablekuma, no government business,” NPP MPs called for urgent action to ensure the constituency’s representation in Parliament.

The chaos forced proceedings to be temporarily suspended.

Residents of Ablekuma North in the Greater Accra Region remain the only constituents in Ghana’s 9th Parliament without representation.

The controversy stems from the EC’s failure to complete the re-collation of the constituency’s 2024 parliamentary election results after nullifying the initially declared outcome, which favored the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn.

A High Court order directed the EC to re-collate and announce the results for both the Ablekuma North and Nsawam-Adoagyiri constituencies.

On January 17, 2025, the EC suspended the re-collation process for Ablekuma North due to chaos caused by supporters of political parties at the Electoral Commission’s Greater Accra Regional Collation Centre.

The situation has left residents of Ablekuma North without a voice in Parliament, fueling frustrations and intensifying calls for the prompt resolution of the matter.
