The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has presented various learning materials and the necessary equipment for the teaching and learning of Basic Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (BSTEM) in 86 basic schools in the Northern Region.
The Minister handed the materials to the Northern Regional Director of Education on Friday, October 10, 2025, for onward distribution to the respective beneficiary schools.
In his remarks, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale South, said the policy intervention is aimed at strengthening foundational learning at the basic education level, where learning outcomes matter most for the future of learners.
He noted this is an opportunity to expose and train learners to critical thinking, creative and analytical thinking at the basic level.
The Minister assured the commitment of the John Mahama Government to enhancing infrastructure at the basic level, and more specifically, providing opportunities for practical and experimental learning, away from the traditional and abstract way of teaching and learning in the country.
“I have always publicly acknowledged and thanked the Vice President of our Republic, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang. She set up a committee to evaluate the performance of learners in the STEM area, particularly maths and science and that has given birth to the BSTEM project,” Mr Haruna Iddrisu stated.
The Tamale South lawmaker disclosed that about 3,500 schools nationwide are expected to benefit from the BSTEM equipment, including electronic kits, robotics equipment, computers, projectors, among other requisite materials.
He reiterated that the future is about science, technology, engineering and mathematics education, and that, subject to the availability of resources, a STEM centre would be built to serve the northern part of the country.
For his part, the Northern Regional Director of Education, Mr. Alhassan Alidu Jnr, after receiving the items on behalf of the selected districts, expressed gratitude to the Minister for the northern region being the first to receive the materials.
He noted the equipment will help to strengthen the teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics in the beneficiary schools.
The Regional Director added that the vision is to lay a strong foundation for STEM education, nurture critical thinking, and prepare the learners for future opportunities in an increasingly technology-driven world.
“We are confident that this intervention will go a long way to make the teaching of Science and Mathematics more practical, engaging, and effective in classrooms across the region,” he stated.
