The Northern Region Muslims Council of Ghana (NRMCG) has commended all Ghanaians for the peaceful conduct of the 2024 presidential and parliamentary election last Saturday, December 7. The group urged that, “As we move forward, let us unite in our pursuit of a brighter future for our nation. Let us put aside our differences and work towards common goals.”
The Council further commended traditional leaders, Imams, Pastors, the Security, the Media, Local and International Observers, other Partners for their diverse roles played stressing that their roles went a long way to collectively help the entire process.
Accordingly, the Council has congratulated the President elect, H. E. John Dramani Mahama for his victory in the just ended polls.
The Chairman of the Council, Sheikh Issah Alhassan Abubakari, in a statement copied to THE CUSTODIAN Online noted that the victory is a clear testament and affidavit to the trust and confidence Ghanaians have in him. As a result, the group has therefore urged him [President elect] to work tirelessly for the betterment of the entire nation.
“We equally extend our sincere commendations to the Vice President, H. E. Alhaji Dr. Mahmmudu Bawumia, the Flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party for his gracious concession. This single act of Dr. Bawumia shows his statesmanship and commitment to democracy and peace of the nation” he added.
Alhaji Issah stated that the actions of the Vice President have demonstrated that, even in defeat, one can still uphold the values of statesmanship and patriotism.
“His pledge to help ensure smooth transfer of power is equally commendable” he emphasized.
Post-election violence
Meanwhile, the Northern Region Muslims Council of Ghana in the statement also condemned the post-elections violence and looting of state assets in no uncertain terms stating that the violent conducts nearly marred the peaceful elections.
“We hereby call on all youth of the region to stay away from such uncouth behaviour and acts. They don’t speak well of us as people of faith. Indeed vandalism such as what we have witnessed have no place in our democracy, and we must all work together to promote peace, tolerance, and understanding” he stated.
