The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has held National Thanksgiving Services following the successful conduct of its presidential primary held on January 31, 2026.
The Thanksgiving services were aimed at expressing the party’s gratitude to God for what it described as a peaceful, credible and historic internal electoral process.
The events were held on the theme “Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving,” drawn from Psalm 50:14.
NPP presidential primary, which has been widely praised by party stakeholders, and even opposition elements, resulted in the decisive election of former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the NPP’s presidential candidate for the 2028 general election.
The party said it remains deeply thankful to God for the successful outcome of the exercise.
The Thanksgiving activities were held in two parts.
An Islamic thanksgiving prayer service was held on Friday, February 13, 2026, at the National Mosque in Kanda.
This was followed by an interdenominational Christian thanksgiving service on Sunday, February 15, 2026, at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) Auditorium.
The services were attended by Dr Bawumia, former presidential aspirants, NPP leadership, Christian and Muslim clergy, current and former Members of Parliament, former ministers, former chief executives and managing directors of state institutions, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, as well as other past government appointees.

Bawumia calls for party unity
The newly elected NPP flagbearer, Dr Bawumia, called for party unity, underscoring the importance of using the party’s ongoing national thanksgiving services for prayers and renewed commitment to serving the country.
Addressing the NPP faithful, the 2028 flagbearer reminded party members that the thanksgiving services were to reflect on God’s guidance throughout the party’s recent internal elections.
“We are grateful to God for His guidance and mercies throughout our recent internal processes. Our national conference was a success, and our flag-bearership election was incident-free. Without God’s arms wrapped around us, we would not have been successful. Praise be to His name,” Dr Bawumia stated at the National Mosque at Kanda in Accra.
He explained that the services were not about individual ambition or personal glory.
Instead, they should serve as a moment for all members of the party to reflect on the greater cause of nation-building. “Today’s Thanksgiving service is not a celebration of personal ambition. It is, for me, a moment to join you all in reflection, prayer, and recommitment to a higher cause—the cause of contributing to the building of a nation that is truly great and strong,” Dr. Bawumia declared.
Dr. Bawumia urged the party members to unite and put aside any differences for the greater good.
He called for a focus on common goals rather than divisive tendencies, emphasising the importance of solidarity. “Let us deepen our concentration on what we have in common and put less emphasis on what we differ on,” Bawumia said.

As he rallied the party’s members to prepare for the upcoming 2028 elections, Dr. Bawumia reminded them that the road ahead would require discipline, sacrifice, and hard work.
He urged them to approach the election with humility and a clear purpose.
“Victory in 2028 will not be gifted to us. It must be earned, constituency by constituency, household by household,” Bawumia said, setting the tone for the vigorous campaign ahead.
