The Member of Parliament for the Gushegu constituency in the Northern Region, Lawyer Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli, has given a historical antecedent of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The lawmaker said that the NPP was formed by the amalgamation of several political groupings, including the National Liberation Movement (NLM), the Northern People’s Party (NPP), the Togoland Congress, and the Muslim Action Party, among others.
Lawyer Tampuli stated that these political parties later formed the United Party, which is popularly referred to as the UP tradition.
Mr. Tampuli made this argument when he addressed delegates of the party in his constituency during a visit of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on Sunday, January 11, as part of his tour of the Northern Region ahead of the forthcoming January 31 presidential primary.
The Gushegu Legislator disclosed that the Kwame Nkrumah government in 1957 passed the Avoidance of Discrimination Act, 1957 (No. 38 of 1957), to prevent organisations from promoting ethnic, regional, racial, or religious division and to stop them from influencing elections based on these affiliations.
“We will not succumb to little minds who are trying to turn the party into an ethnic or religious party.
“We will fight for the unity of this party to actualise the vision of the founding fathers of this party” he said.
The remarks of the former Deputy Minister for Transport were in response to comments purportedly made by MP for Asante Akim South, Kwaku Asante Boateng, who described Dr Bawumia as a “stranger” within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and questioned his suitability to lead the party as its flagbearer into the 2028 elections.
Hon Tampuli, therefore, tasked people who do not know the history of the NPP to read about the party. He added that the NPP is an inclusive national party, and it shall continue to remain so.
“Today, the son of one of the founding fathers of the party is a stranger? Upon all he has done for this party? We have little minds who don’t know the history of this party; go back and read about the history of this party,” he advised.
