After months of intensive nationwide campaigning, delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)—often described as the party’s “kingmakers”—are expected to elect former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as their flagbearer today, January 31, 2026.
The NPP boasts several prominent figures capable of stepping forward, with party insiders indicating that the final decision will be shaped not only by political experience but also by public appeal, party loyalty, and the ability to articulate a compelling vision that resonates with Ghanaians nationwide.
Speculation has largely centred on the party’s 2024 presidential contenders—Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and Mr Kennedy Ohene Agyapong—both of whom remain influential figures within the NPP and have been active on the political front.
In addition, a number of aspirants have picked up nomination forms to contest the primaries, including Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Dr Bryan Acheampong, and Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum.
Delegates’ apparent preference for the former Vice President and NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate is grounded in what they describe as his strong reputation, consistency, and proven track record.
Several pre-primary surveys further point to a decisive victory for Dr Bawumia, with projections suggesting he could win in 14 of the 16 regions to secure a first-round triumph.
The latest figures from Global InfoAnalytics predict a “one-touch” victory of 57 per cent or more, while Africa Policy Lens (APL) projects a 61 per cent win, citing his unmatched experience as vital to rebuilding the party after recent electoral setbacks.
With rivals trailing in the polls and momentum firmly on his side, indications from the grassroots suggest a strong inclination to retain the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate for the next general election.
Many delegates also cite Dr Bawumia’s years of dedicated service to the party, his calm demeanour under pressure, and his steadfast commitment to the party’s core values as key reasons for their support.
