The Chairman of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Presidential Elections Committee, Osei Owusu, has expressed the view that the party needs a chairman with leadership qualities akin to those of Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Owusu praised Asiedu Nketia for his organisational skills, discipline, and ability to unify party members, noting that such traits are essential for the success and cohesion of any political party.
He emphasised that the role of a party chairman extends beyond administrative duties, highlighting the importance of strengthening grassroots structures, mediating internal conflicts, and positioning the party for electoral victories.
He said, “It got to a point where most people are leaving the party to join the NDC, and the numbers keep increasing. So maybe there is someone attracting them.”
Speaking on Accra-based Asempa FM, Owusu credited Asiedu Nketia’s leadership as a key factor in the NDC’s growing appeal, pointing to his consistency and firmness as defining traits.
He added, “What I have seen myself is Asiedu Nketia. He is the one who has made the party attractive. You see the consistency; it’s visible. If you are there and you want to be stubborn, he will deal with you.
“To bring the appeal back, we have to restore discipline. I believe that if we continue with elections, we won’t get the person we need at this time. We should focus on searching for the right person and prepare to put the party in their hands.”
The comments come as the NPP prepares for internal elections and strategises for upcoming national polls, making leadership and organisational effectiveness key topics of discussion.
Regarding a potential candidate to lead and unite the party, Owusu singled out former Energy Minister Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko as someone capable of restoring discipline.
He said, “If Boakye Agyarko says he will lead the party, I will stop what I am doing and support him. He is the person who can bring the discipline and everything we need right now to bring everyone back to the party.”
