Presidential aspirants of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have signed a peace pact, committing themselves to a peaceful, tolerant, and issue-based campaign ahead of the party’s internal elections.
The agreement, signed at a meeting involving party leadership and the aspirants, is aimed at ensuring unity within the party and preventing violence, insults, and acts that could undermine the credibility of the flagbearer selection process.
The aspirants who signed the agreement are Kennedy Ohene Agyapong – Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Dr Bryan Acheampong – MP for Abetifi and former Minister for Agriculture, Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia – Former Vice President, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum – Former Minister of Education Kwabena Agyepong – Former Presidential Press Secretary and NPP General Secretary.
By appending their signatures to the pact, the aspirants pledged to respect party rules and decisions, avoid inflammatory language, and encourage their supporters to conduct themselves responsibly throughout the campaign period.
They also agreed to resolve disputes through established party structures rather than resorting to confrontation.
Speaking at the event, party officials emphasised that the NPP’s strength lies in its unity and discipline, urging aspirants to place the interest of the party and the nation above personal ambition. They warned that any breach of the peace pact would attract sanctions in line with the party’s constitution.
Some of the aspirants, in brief remarks, welcomed the initiative and reaffirmed their commitment to a clean campaign focused on ideas, policies, and leadership qualities rather than personal attacks.
The signing of the peace pact comes as the NPP prepares for a keenly contested presidential primary, with several high-profile figures seeking to lead the party into the next general elections.
Party supporters have been urged to support the process peacefully and contribute to maintaining harmony within the party.
The NPP leadership expressed confidence that the peace pact will help safeguard the integrity of the internal elections and position the party strongly for the challenges ahead.
