A man has been shot dead following a prolonged gun battle with police during an operation linked to a chieftaincy dispute in Akwapim-Akropong.
The deceased, identified as Kwasi Ansah Eku, popularly known as “Dragon,” reportedly resisted arrest and opened fire on officers, triggering a two-hour exchange of gunfire.
Police said a pump-action gun, along with several spent and live AA cartridges, was retrieved from the suspect after the incident.
Police operation
According to a police situational report, the operation was conducted in the early hours of April 10, 2026, by personnel from the Eastern Regional Police Intelligence Directorate, with support from the National Headquarters.
The exercise formed part of efforts to apprehend individuals captured in videos allegedly participating in violent clashes during the Awukudae celebration in Akropong on April 8.
“Personnel proceeded to a house on Akuffo Road to arrest suspect Kwasi Ansah Eku, alias Dragon. Police announced their presence and called on the suspect to come out of the room.
“As officers attempted to gain entry, the suspect fired multiple shots at them. Police returned fire, and during the exchange, which lasted about two hours, he was fatally shot. His body was subsequently retrieved,” the report stated.
Arrests and investigations
Police confirmed the arrest of three additional suspects: Bright Ofori Asante, also known as “Bonto,” aged 33; Kwame Ayeh, alias “Saboba,” aged 41; and Elvis Adjei, aged 19.
They are alleged to have obstructed police and were also identified in footage linked to the earlier disturbances.
“The suspects have been transferred to Koforidua, while the body has been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy. One pump-action gun, along with spent and live AA cartridges, was retrieved from the suspect,” the report added.
Rising tensions
The incident highlights escalating tensions surrounding chieftaincy disputes in the area, as authorities intensify efforts to restore calm and bring those involved in recent clashes to justice.
Police say investigations are ongoing.
