The Ghana Police Service has recovered GH¢140,000 and an AK-47 assault rifle following an armed robbery attack on a mobile money vendor at Lashibi in the Greater Accra Region.
In a statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Regional Police Command, Chief Superintendent Juliana Obeng, the Police said the incident occurred on Friday, July 3, 2026.
According to preliminary investigations, the victim was driving home from work with a bag containing GH¢140,000 when he was ambushed by two armed men riding a motorbike. The suspects allegedly opened fire on the victim’s vehicle, damaging the right rear tyre and the front windscreen before seizing the bag containing the cash.
Police said the suspects attempted to flee the scene on their motorbike after the robbery. However, the victim reportedly returned fire, fatally shooting one of the attackers.
The second suspect managed to escape but abandoned the stolen bag during the getaway. Officers later recovered the bag with the full GH¢140,000 intact. The victim escaped the attack unhurt.
A search conducted on the deceased suspect led to the recovery of an AK-47 assault rifle, two magazines loaded with 55 rounds of live ammunition, an additional 11 rounds of ammunition, GH¢3,000 in cash, a Samsung mobile phone, and an identification card bearing the name Innocent Elemuwa Akachukeu, aged 46.
Investigators also retrieved five spent AK-47 shell casings and two spent pistol shell casings from the crime scene as part of ongoing forensic investigations.
The body of the deceased suspect has been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary for preservation, autopsy, and formal identification.
The Accra Regional Police Command has since taken over the investigation and says efforts are underway to track down and arrest the suspect who remains at large.
The Police have appealed to members of the public with credible information that could assist the investigation to report to the nearest Police Station or contact the emergency numbers 18555 or 191.
Reaffirming its commitment to tackling violent crime, the Accra Regional Police Command assured the public that it remains dedicated to protecting lives and property while intensifying efforts to bring all persons involved in the robbery to justice.
