The 2024 Parliamentary Candidate of the New Patriotic Party in the Sagnarigu constituency, Felicia Tettey has outrightly condemned the assault on the Northern Regional Treasurer of the opposition National Democratic Congress, Hajia Shamima Yakubu.
A regional vice Chairman of the NDC in the northern region, Alhaji Abdul Hamid popularly known as Chairman Gbewaa is alleged to have physically assaulted the female politician during a party meeting held in Tamale last Saturday, January 13, 2024.
Madam Shamima was seen bleeding profusely and her face disfigured following the attack on her the Vice Chairman. She has since reported the incident to the regional police command in Tamale and went for medical care.
Reacting to the development on her Facebook page, the NPP Member of Parliament hopeful unequivocally condemned the incident, saying this is a grave violation of human rights.
“I strongly condemn any form of political violence, especially when it targets women. The recent assault on Hajia Shamima Razak, NDC Northern Regional Treasurer is not only uncalled for but also a grave violation of human rights. It is essential that immediate action is taken to address this issue and ensure that those responsible are held accountable for their actions” she said.
Madam Felicia believes political violence undermines the principles of democracy and equality, adding it is crucial that “We stand together to condemn such acts. Women should not be subjected to violence or intimidation simply for expressing their political beliefs or participating in the democratic process.”
She emphasized, “We must create a society where everyone feels safe and empowered to engage in political activities without fear of violence or harassment. It is the responsibility of both individuals and institutions to promote a culture of respect, tolerance, and inclusivity.”
The New Patriotic Party Parliamentary candidate further called for investigations into the matter and appropriate measures taken to ensure justice prevails.
“Additionally, it is important to implement policies and programs that educate and raise awareness about the importance of gender equality and the prevention of violence against women in political contexts.”
She admonished that, “Let us work together to build a society where everyone, regardless of gender, can fully participate in politics and contribute to positive change without fear of violence or discrimination”.
Meanwhile, the Saturday attack is the second of such violate confrontations in the opposition in the northern region. The National Vice Chairman of the party, Chief Sofo Awudu Azoka, was also allegedly assaulted and his shirt torn into pieces a fortnight ago during a unity and reconciliation meeting held at the Global Dream hotel in Tamale.
